On March 19, the Workshop of Low Carbon Agriculture in China was held in Bejing Friendship Hotel. This workshop aims to summarize and to conclude research findings of the Sino-UK cooperating project "Low Carbon Agriculture in China". The workshop was sponsored by China Ministry of Agriculture and the Embassy of United Kindom in Beijing. China Agricultural University (CAU) and Center for Chinese Agricultural Policies (CCAP) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) co-organized the workshop. Professor Jikun Huang and Dr. Xiangping Jia from CCAP participated and made presentations at the Workshop. The Sino-UK Low Carbon Agriculture Project is part of China-UK Sustainable Agriculture Innovation Network (SAIN) has been established to provide a coherent framework for the development and implementation of China-UK collaboration on sustainable agriculture. It aims to support the existing China-UK Sustainable Development Dialogue (SDD) and to a flexible and enduring platform for long-term China-UK collaboration in this area. Development of SAIN is included in the SDD Work Programme on Sustainable Agriculture and Fisheries (dated May 2008), which sets out priority areas of collaboration between the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and the United Kingdom Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
The Sino-UK Low Carbon Agriculture Project aims to study the technologies and policies that mitigate the Greenhouse Gas Emission that related to the use of nitrogen fertilizer. Through a set of surveys on industries and farms, the research team quantitatively analyzes the GHG emission related to nitrogen fertilizer by using a life-cycle model. It was estimated that 6-8% of GHG emissions in China was related to use and production of nitrogen fertilizer. The project team concludes that, for a low carbon agriculture in China, a holistic approach is needed (including new fertilizer such as nitrification inhibitors, innovative farmer training programs such as farmer field school, new farming practice such as mechanization and irrigation, and institutional innovations such as land consolidation).
