During 2th to 5th in May in 2012, Led by Prof. Jikun Huang, director of the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy (CCAP) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), climate change research team in CCAP (including Prof. Jinxia Wang, the deputy director of CCAP and two graduate students, Yangjie Wang and Huang Chen) conducted a four days pretest on adaptation measures in response to climate change in Henan and Jiangxi provinces in China. The major objectives of this pretest are to have better understanding on the change of climate and adaptation measures adopted by the local governments and farmers. The information collected from this pretest will promote the research progress for two large projects relevant with climate changes. The first project is the national 973 project on "Impacts of Climate Change on Socio-economic System and Adaptive Strategy" funded by the Ministry of Sciences and Technology (MOST) and the second project is an international cooperation project on “Water Resources and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Vulnerable North China Plain and Poyang Lake Region” funded by Canada International Development Research Centre (IDRC).Under the assistance of Jiangxi Agricultural University and Henan Agricultural University, two local collaborators, research team members had a comprehensive communication with some relevant local government officials from Development and Reform Commission, Weather Bureau, Agriculture Bureau and Water Resources Bureau in two provinces. Based on the communication, research team members have had better understanding on the regional long-term spatial and inter-annual variability of temperature and precipitation in recent years, recognized the impacts of various extreme weather events (such as droughts, floods, typhoon and heat waves) on socio-economy. Besides, research team members also discussed the technical and non-technical options adopted by local governments and the difficulties in response to the extreme weather events. In addition, research teams members also discussed the climate change issues with local community leaders (county, township and village leaders) and local farmers.
