Principal Scientist (Economics)

ICRISAT seeks applications for Principal Scientist (Economics), to be based at its headquarters in Hyderabad, India. S/He should be capable of articulating a strong vision of the opportunities for the poor in smallholder agriculture and understanding the key constraints for enhancing efficiency and equity in agriculture in the marginal environments. He/she should be able to translate this vision into a consistent and productive research offering a significant array of international public goods.

About ICRISAT: ICRISAT is a non-profit, international organization for science-based agricultural development. Established in 1972, it is one of the 15 agricultural research centers of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and supported by more than 48 governments, foundations, and development banks. ICRISAT has four Global Research Themes: Biotechnology, Crop Improvement, Agro-ecosystems Management, and Institutions, Markets, Policy and Impacts (IMPI). This position will be housed within the IMPI theme with the major emphasis being on Village Level Studies (VLS). VLS were initiated by ICRISAT's Economics Program in India in 1975, and later extended to Africa. The studies have provided important insights about changing household and village livelihoods and helped scientists identify and understand socioeconomic , agro-biological , and institutional constraints to agricultural development in the Semi-Arid Tropics (SAT). In recognition of the profound economic and social changes that have affected the rural economies over several decades, the Social Science research team at ICRISAT, in partnership with national research programs and leading institutes worldwide, resumed its VLS to improve the quantity and quality of longitudinal household panel data and complementary meso-level time series data so that decision making is based on evidence on impacts on the poor.

The Job: A social scientist with exceptional vision is sought to undertake applied economics research and lead ICRISAT's endeavors in tracking change in rural poverty in household and village economies in South Asia. The scientist hired for this position will conduct research on dynamics of rural poverty in household and village economies, with focus on testing key hypotheses explaining major changes in crop and livestock production systems, labor allocation, market development, capital stocks and flows, health and nutrition indicators, migration and poverty trends. Special attention will be directed toward the evaluation of changing livelihood strategies, and implications for investments in new agricultural technology and policy reform. The scientist will serve as coordinator for primary data collection and selection of regional recipients for the VLS project small grants facility and lead the analysis of panel data using state-of-the art methodologies and dissemination of research results to the policy makers and other stakeholders.

The Person: Ph.D. in Economics , Agricultural Economics , or related social science discipline with a minimum of 10 years experience in rural studies including poverty analysis , food security , vulnerability , social mobility , innovation systems , and the capacity to translate the findings of applied research into policy recommendations. Ability to link micro and macro approaches and provide feedback for R&D and policy makers is expected. Substantial experience in handling large aggregated datasets, managing and analyzing farm surveys, and computer skills in data analysis are essential. Analytical, quantitative and outstanding econometric skills are strongly desirable. Experience in multi-disciplinary research and good knowledge of methods for analysis of spatial and temporal data would be an advantage. Applicants should have excellent communication skills in spoken and written English, including a record of international peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate should have an ability to work and perform in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment. The candidate should be an effective team player with ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment.

Period and Remuneration: This is an internationally recruited position with competitive pay and benefits. The appointment is initially for three years and likely to be extended depending on requirement, funding availability, and performance of the incumbent. An internationally competitive salary and benefits package that includes international health insurance, housing, children's educational allowance, car allowances, and appropriate relocation assistance, will be paid.
